Meet the passionate team behind Kalagala Education Initiative (KEI). From our board members to volunteers and staff, every member is dedicated to empowering children in rural Uganda through education, mentorship, and sports.

Joseph Sseruwu - Board Chairman
Joseph Sseruwu is the founder and Chairman of the Board at Kalagala Education Initiative (KEI). Born in Rakai District, he witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of HIV on families and communities, inspiring his lifelong commitment to education, youth empowerment, and community development. Having studied in Universal Primary Education (UPE) schools for seven years, Joseph deeply understands the challenges children face in rural Uganda and is passionate about creating opportunities for them to thrive. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Uganda Martyrs University and is currently pursuing an MSc in Supply Chain Management from Uganda Management Institute.
With over 9 years of professional experience in Project Management, Joseph began his career as an Operations Coordinator for USAID/Uganda Health Supply Chain, later joining Umeme Ltd as Assistant Project Manager on the World Bank-funded Energy for Rural Transformation Project, where he oversaw free power connections to marginalized communities. He currently works as a freelance Supervisor with the British Council Uganda’s Examinations Department, managing exam operations, training staff, and ensuring compliance with international standards.
Joseph has a long-standing passion for volunteering. In 2013, he organized a fundraising campaign that collected food and scholastic materials, which were donated to Sango Bay Refugee Camp in Rakai District. He also serves on the Board as Treasurer for Amani Family Centre, an Irish-led CBO providing free birth and postnatal care to mothers living in the slums of Kanyogoga, Kampala.
A lifelong sportsman, Joseph has played football since the age of five and captained his University team at Uganda Martyrs University. His love for sports drives his vision for KEI’s Football Academy, using the game as a tool for personal growth, teamwork, leadership, and creating sustainable opportunities for underprivileged and orphaned children.
Under his leadership, KEI continues to grow its programs in education, mentorship, cultural exchange, and community development, transforming lives and strengthening communities across Kyotera District and beyond.

Maurice Ssenkumba - Finance Lead
Maurice is a results-driven accounting and finance professional with over nine years of experience in financial management, audit, and organizational compliance. He currently serves as a Board Member at the Kalagala Education Initiative (KEI), where he provides financial oversight, governance, and strategic leadership to ensure the organization’s education and community programs are sustainable and impactful. His financial expertise and commitment to transparency strengthen KEI’s accountability systems and support its mission of transforming lives through education, volunteerism, and youth empowerment.
Maurice has built a strong professional foundation across the corporate, technology, and energy sectors. At Neptune Software Group, he served as an Accountant overseeing organizational budgeting, audits, and statutory compliance, working closely with regulatory bodies such as URA and NSSF. His role involved preparing financial statements and implementing internal controls that improved efficiency and transparency. At Africa Power and Equipment Ltd, Maurice managed payroll, taxation, and end-of-month financial reporting, streamlining financial processes and promoting fiscal responsibility.
In addition to his corporate roles, Maurice has held key leadership and financial management positions, including Treasurer of Neptune Uganda Staff SACCO. He gained valuable experience with Allied Certified Public Accountants building expertise in financial reporting, tax compliance, and audit preparation. His blend of technical skill, integrity, and passion for community development continues to define his contribution both in the corporate world and within KEI’s board leadership.

Ssemakula D. William - Operations Lead
David William Ssemakula is a highly skilled Finance and Administration professional with extensive experience in financial management, organizational development, and strategic planning. He holds a Bachelor of Accounting from Uganda Martyrs University and a Master of Commerce from Amity University, India, equipping him with both local and international perspectives on finance and management.
David currently works as a Financial Analyst with Baylor College of Children’s Medicine Uganda, where he oversees financial operations, ensures compliance with accounting standards, and supports effective resource management. In addition to his current role, he has served as a Supervisory Committee Member at Masaka Elders SACCO Ltd in 2018, contributing to governance, financial oversight, and policy implementation.
At Kalagala Education Initiative (KEI), David is in charge of Finance & Administration, ensuring that all programs are efficiently managed and financially accountable. He plays a critical role in budgeting, reporting, donor fund management, and administrative coordination, helping KEI achieve its mission of empowering children through education, mentorship, and community development.
With his dedication to integrity, accuracy, and organizational efficiency, David is a vital part of KEI’s leadership team, ensuring the sustainability and growth of the organization’s initiatives in Kyotera District and beyond.
He also brings over 5 years of experience working with children through his work at Baylor, further strengthening KEI’s commitment to child protection. He leads the safeguarding team which is central to every program - from the classroom to the football field to the Letter Exchange Program. He enforces strict measures to ensure children learn, connect, and grow in safe, supportive, and non-exploitative environments.

Celina Sharon Kaisiki - PR Lead
Celina is a seasoned Project Manager and communications strategist currently serving as the Public Relations Lead. She currently works with Bank of Uganda. She brings extensive experience in project coordination, stakeholder engagement, and strategic communication. She manages complex projects and contributes to effective institutional outreach and public engagement.
Sharon holds a Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering from Universiti Malaya in Malaysia, where she developed strong analytical and systems-thinking skills. She is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom, deepening her expertise in leadership, strategy, and organizational management.
At KEI, Sharon leads the organization’s public relations and communications strategy, ensuring that KEI’s mission, programs, and impact are clearly communicated to partners, donors, and the wider community. Her unique blend of technical insight, project management experience, and passion for youth empowerment enables her to strengthen KEI’s visibility, credibility, and stakeholder relationships.
Outside of her professional and board roles, Sharon loves traveling and cooking, passions that reflect her curiosity, creativity, and appreciation for cultural diversity, qualities she brings into her leadership and community engagement work at KEI.
Josephine is a seasoned human resources professional with over 20 years of experience working in Uganda’s Local Government and in Kenya. She currently serves as an HR consultant across both countries, bringing deep expertise in organizational development, talent management, and employee engagement.
As KEI’s Board Member and HR Lead, Josephine oversees HR strategy, supports staff growth, and fosters a positive work culture, ensuring the organization’s team is motivated and equipped to deliver its programs effectively.

Joephine Babirye - HR Lead
Charles is a highly experienced professional with over 15 years in HIV research and programming, focusing on improving the lives of children and families affected by HIV/AIDS. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and Social Development and has dedicated his career to designing and implementing evidence-based, child-centered initiatives that combine social welfare, health, and education.
At the Uganda Virus Research Institute – IAVI (International AIDS Vaccine Initiative) HIV Vaccine Program, Charles engaged in both quantitative and qualitative research, contributing to clinical trials, epidemiological studies, and community-based assessments. While UVRI-IAVI conducts HIV vaccine trials, viral disease surveillance, diagnostics, and capacity building, Charles’s work focused on collecting and analyzing data to inform prevention strategies, community engagement, and evidence-based interventions.
During his tenure with the Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP), Charles participated in longitudinal HIV research, including the Rakai Community Cohort Study, which tracks HIV dynamics in rural communities over decades. He led and contributed to both quantitative and qualitative research on HIV prevention, PMTCT, VMMC, and service delivery programs, working in collaboration with global partners such as Makerere University, Johns Hopkins, Columbia University, and UVRI. RHSP integrates research with health service delivery, ensuring that findings translate into actionable programs for rural populations, and Charles played a central role in generating and interpreting data to improve program outcomes.
Currently, as Head of Programmes at Kalagala Education Initiative (KEI) and a member of the Board of Directors, Charles applies his strong research background to guide education, child sponsorship, volunteer, and youth development initiatives. He ensures that KEI’s programs are data-informed, evidence-based, and rooted in child protection, while fostering partnerships with health institutions, NGOs, and government agencies. His expertise in research and program design strengthens KEI’s mission to empower children and communities in rural Uganda.
